Executive Summary

 

The Future Cities Collaborative has extended an invitation to Liverpool City Council to participate in a forthcoming exchange to the USA to examine innovation ecosystems in major cities on both the east and west coast of the USA.

 

RECOMMENDATION

 

That Council consider participation in the Exchange and either nominate a Councillor or Councillors and/or staff to attend OR decline the offer of participation.

 

 

REPORT

 

The Australian City Exchange on Innovation Ecosystems operated by the Future Cities Collaborative of the United States Studies Centre will take place from 4-13 May 2016 (inclusive) and is designed to meet the needs of Federal, State and local government decision makers, business and community leaders and representatives from academia and industry.

 

The Exchange program will visit San Francisco, Emeryville, Seattle, Boston, New York City and Philadelphia.

 

As part of its membership of the Future Cities Collaborative, Council has been offered the opportunity to participate.  The cost of the exchange for each delegate will be $USD11, 000 plus international travel costs.

 

While enrolment was due by 18 March, places on the Exchange have not yet been fully filled.

CONSIDERATIONS

 

Economic and Financial

Participation in the Exchange offers the opportunity for Council to learn from innovation initiatives in the USA focused on delivering economic growth and creation of jobs for locations.

Participation in the exchange will cost up to A$20,000 per delegate (subject to exact exchange rates and international travel costs).

Environmental and Sustainability

Economic and environmental sustainability is a key driver for the innovation precincts to be visited in the USA.


Social and Cultural

A strong focus of the innovation precincts in the USA is amenity, liveabililty, housing affordability and civic facilities.


Civic Leadership and Governance

Participation in the Exchange will provide Council with examples of best practice in developing innovation precincts in the USA that can potentially be applied to Liverpool’s circumstances.
